Question #1:
Why aren't health insurers allowed to deny coverage or charge higher premiums based upon physical fitness?
I eat right and I exercise seven to eight times per week. I look better - and bench more - at 40 than I did at 20. My cholesterol count is 133. It's just a matter of lifestyle: a choice. My risk of serious health problems - and significant cost to my insurer -is as a result much less than that of an overweight, lethargic person (or smoker, heavy drinker, illicit drug user, etc....).
People who are judged to have caused automobile accidents, or have certain types of citations, etc... pay more than the rest of us for car insurance (a lot more) with the net result being that our premiums are lower than they would be if the total cost to insure drivers were spread evenly among us.
Why can't it work that way with health insurance? Wouldn't that help reduce premiums for the rest of us, as people who make unhealthy lifestyle choices either (a) had to pay higher premiums or (b) opted out of coverage altogether?
The process would be simple - every 3 years the insured would have to take a physical exam with his PCP (the insurer already pays for an annual physical). A higher premium would apply based upon weight guidelines - say starting at 20 lbs overweight - and other measures that could easily be detected via blood test and/or urinalysis, such as drug use.
Isn't this how insurance is supposed to work? The concept is that a group of individuals insures against a risk of something bad happening to any of them.
But self-induced health problems aren't the same insurable risk as are random health problems. It's really unfair for people who stay fit to have to pay more than the true cost of their risk, in order to allow people who don't stay fit to skate off paying less than the true cost of their risk, especially when the differences are the result of choices.
And wouldn't higher premiums for obesity, smoking, etc.... serve as an additional inducement for people with bad habits to change them?
Question was health, not life.
Incog - yes, obesity is caused by overeating. [calories consumed minus calories burned] x 3500 = 1 lb

Question #8:
Regarding health care, does this not make sense to you?
By Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa)Washington, DC — With the Senate health committee convening daily to craft a comprehensive health reform bill, the basic outline of this landmark legislation is now clear.
Yes, it will ensure access to affordable, quality care for every American. But, just as important, it will hold down health care costs by creating a sharp new emphasis on disease prevention and public health.
As the lead Senator in drafting the Prevention and Public Health section of the bill, I view this legislation as our opportunity to recreate America as a genuine wellness society – a society that is focused on prevention, good nutrition, fitness, and public health.
The fact is, we currently do not have a health care system in the United States; we have a sick care system. If you’re sick, you get care, whether through insurance, Medicare, Medicaid, SCHIP, community health centers, emergency rooms, or charity. The problem is that this is all about patching things up after people develop serious illnesses and chronic conditions.
We spend a staggering $2.3 trillion annually on health care – 16.5 percent of our GDP and far more than any other country spends on health care – yet the World Health Organization ranks U.S. health care only 37th among nations, on par with Serbia.
We spend twice as much per capita on health care as European countries, but we are twice as sick with chronic disease.
How can this be so? The problem is that we have systematically neglected wellness and disease prevention. Currently in the United States, 95 percent of every health care dollar is spent on treating illnesses and conditions after they occur. But we spend peanuts on prevention.
The good news in these dismal statistics is that, by reforming our system and focusing on fighting and preventing chronic disease, we have a huge opportunity. We can not only save hundreds of billions of dollars; we can also dramatically improve the health of the American people.
Consider this: Right now, some 75 percent of health care costs are accounted for by heart disease, diabetes, prostate cancer, breast cancer, and obesity. What these five diseases and conditions have in common is that they are largely preventable and even reversible by changes in nutrition, physical activity, and lifestyle.
MEGAN - No honey, I definately don't work for any medically related company.
I'm one of the folks they've forgotten about since I don't have insurance anymore.
Question #9:

Question #10:
Obese diet/never worked out in my life, help?
I am 21 and have never been in shape, small, or on a diet. I am 5'1" 250 even though I don't look it. I recently gained 50 of that from mental health problems that made me want to stay inside (severe anxiety). I used to eat large portions, never worked out, lots of greasy food, drank about a 12 pk of Dr. Pepper a day... just generally unhealthy.I realized this one day while getting dressed and noticing my plus size clothes were tight. =/ Needless to say, I want this to change. I have been speed walking for an hour a day in sweats and a hoodie to keep myself sweating and huffing. I try to dance in my room instead of just listening to music and playing on the computer (limit my computer usage to twenty mins at a time).
As far as eating... I haven't the slightest idea what to do. I am very picky and don't like most oils and dressings people use. I don't like the taste of meat but I will eat it if it's necessary. I love vegetables and fruits but fear that is not enough for a healthy diet. As of right now, that is all I am eating. (Cucumbers, Green Peppers, Tomatoes, Lettuce, Carrots, Celery, etc.)
I eat a veggie or two (depending on how much I have already ate) about 1-4 times daily... Sometimes I am just not hungry. I am moving to a third floor apartment so that will also help fitness wise.
Basically, my question is given this...
Will I loose weight?
Is there a different diet I can use?
Anyone have a story similar??
Also, in place of the Dr. Pepper I am drinking water only and lots of it.

Question #16:
How can I convince my European friends to do away with our Universal health care and embrace liberty?
After reading all the intelligent conservative posts here I understand now we got it all wrong when we provide health care to everyone like health and well being should be the first concern. I realize we ignore the needs of the insurance company CEO's and the rules of the free market. Profit never even crosses our minds like health care is a right instead of a privilege. So inspired by the brave and erudite conservative posters on my favorite website I'm trying to change that mindsetHowever when I proposed abolishing our universal health care in favor of the American system I was met with a lot of hostility, some even questioned my sanity quoting statistics that show the US spends more per capita than we do and still has a millions of uninsured people.
Any idea how I can persuade my neighbors, country men and fellow Europeans to overcome the socialist oppression of universal health care?
For reference this is the current system we have here in Belgium
